Ted entered the long portal station. Using the portal always gave him the heebie-jeebies. Although it looked like a strange train station, he knew what it was for. And he knew that too many things could go wrong. Especially where he was going.
Xardulan — a planet accessible only through a wormhole using this portal. It was all carefully monitored by the government, and he knew it should be safe. But it always unnerved him. Gift of Life – The heart remembers. A powerful short story of a heart transplant and the gift of life.
Brooke woke up to the sound of machines beeping, a sound that for some reason was soothing. She was still alive!
Her chest ached. But that was normal for just two days after her heart transplant. It had been agonizing waiting for an appropriate donor, and she was excited when one finally became available. It was her only chance at life.
For two weeks she remained in the hospital, hooked up to tubes, drains, IVs, and monitors. She felt weak and exhausted, and recovery was slow but steady. After following all the nurses’ instructions and doing all the exercises given to her by physical therapy, it was finally time to go home. Although a bit nervous about leaving the safety of the hospital, she couldn’t wait to go back to her own home. And with her husband working from home, it was reassuring to know she would have him there to help her...

The Handyman – A sweet, romantic short story of longing, a screwdriver, and love.
Jenny stared at her kitchen cabinet. No matter what she did or how she tried to fix it, the door to that one cabinet still hung crooked. Frustrated, after working at it for weeks, she finally broke down and called a handyman. She hoped it was worth it and the cabinet door would finally be fixed.
The handyman was due to arrive any minute. She made sure the kitchen was reasonably clean, and she hoped the worker, whoever he was, did not have a short shirt and show a plumber's crack. Other than that, she hoped he just did a good job.
Ten minutes later, the doorbell rang, and when she opened the door, she felt her eyes open wide. A young, handsome man stood there, dirty-blond hair falling over his forehead. Deep blue eyes gazed back at her. There had to be a mistake. Maybe he was at the wrong house, and the real handyman, an old, fat, hairy guy, would still show up...

Good Friends – a touching, heart-felt story of friendship, grief, and love.
Brooke sat at his bedside holding his cool, frail hand. After months of a rapidly moving cancer ravaging his body, he was losing his fight. She knew he didn't have much time left.
"Matt," she said softly. "I'm here for you. I'm so sorry you're going through this." She wiped a tear away. "And I need to tell you something before you go." She cleared her throat. "I know we've been friends for a long time. Good friends." She paused and blew her nose. "I need to let you know that I am in love with you. I fell in love with you a while back. For a long time now, I've wished we could be more than friends."

Swirls of Mist – A short story thriller of escape through the woods. Perfect for Halloween!
Cassie frantically looked around at the trees, her heart pounding. How could she have gotten lost? She had followed the path into the woods and explored a little to spend some time in nature. And somehow she had gotten turned around.
She walked a little farther and hesitated. Was she going in the right direction? A layer of mist covered much of the ground, swirling in places, making it hard to see. A sound reached her, and she wasn't quite sure what she heard. Looking around, she noticed a cabin a short distance away. Her body shivered as she gazed at it, trying to decide what to do.
A scream pierced the air. It was a man's scream and it came from the cabin. Her throat knotted up...

Love from a Hummingbird – A sweet and haunting short story of grief and everlasting love.
Matthew pulled on the oars, gliding the kayak gently through the canal. He breathed in, taking the rich, humid air deep into his lungs. He loved being out here in the bayou with nothing but the gentle flow of the water, the overhang of trees brimming with fragrant green leaves, and the birds that silently watched as he eased by.
He wished Amber could have been here. But it hurt too much to think about that, and he pushed it from his mind and kept paddling...

Bucket of Life – A touching, heart-warming short story of near-death, survival, and life.
Squeezing pressure. Hard to breathe. My chest ached. My jaw hurt. Dizziness flooded through me and I felt weak. I stumbled to the phone and called 9-1-1. Didn’t feel well. Nauseous. Felt awful. Could not take a deep breath. Shuffled to the front door and unlocked it. Lay down on the floor in front of the unlocked door and hoped they would get there in time. Darkness.
Surrounded by a flurry of activity. I was placed on a gurney. I felt a mask pressed to my face. I felt movement and heard sirens as the ambulance raced to the hospital...

Window to the Future – A short story of a glimpse into the future for our world.
Aliya brushed the hair out of her face as she walked up the grassy incline. She had wanted to climb to the top of the hill in her neighborhood and see the view for months now. Her breathing heavy and ragged from exertion, she was finally here. A shiver of anticipation ran through her as she neared the crest.
Looking up, her eyes opened wide and she stared at the view at the top of the hill. A ruin was there — part of one, anyway. Just the window was left from some unknown structure...

First Steps of Recovery – A short story of courage and healing.
Danielle grimaced in pain and massaged her right thigh. It was aching again, even more than usual. Both legs ached, but the right one was worse today. She wondered if she would ever stop hurting.
Rage surged through her as her mind drifted back to the accident that had left her crippled. She had been crossing the street and was in the crosswalk when some guy who was high on something came barreling down the road, driving much too fast, and hit her. She had gone flying, and both legs were shattered, along with a fracture and dislocation of a vertebra in her lower back. If only she could take that day back and have walked somewhere else instead. But she couldn’t. It happened...

Escape – A terrifying thriller short story of a desperate attempt to escape.
The slap stung her face and brought tears to her eyes. She had to find a way to get out of there and away from that man.
“Now don’t you give me a problem, girl. You’re mine now. I can do anything I want with you.” His sour breath washed over her as his eyes frantically looked around the small room. “Don’t you even think of escaping or it will be even worse for you, I promise.” He backed up and reached the doorway. “You just sit tight now and don’t move. I’m gonna go get some rope and I’ll be right back..."
